The quality of a pencil sharpener, especially the blade, is crucial for optimal sharpening of wooden pencils. Because of their stiff, hard leads, graphite pencils are sharpened fine and sharp. Because of their soft leads, colored pencils are sharpened blunt and coarse. For optimum sharpening, we recommend replacing the pencil sharpener frequently because the blade deteriorates over time, causing the lead to break.
