Disminuye la consistencia del óleo, y disuelve sus barnices, sus aceites y sus medios. Sirve también para limpiar todos los utensilios (pinceles, espátulas, etc.). Es recomendable sólo para las capas inferiores, ya que aligera la pintura y la hace menos cubriente y menos grasa, por lo que, una vez utilizado, la supercie pintada sigue quedando porosa.
